Logan’s Room

During my 2014 “grey phase”, I could not get enough of the calming neutral and filled my entire house with it. Grey walls, grey furniture, grey artwork, grey accents….you get the picture.

We were searching for new homes and found the most amazing fixer-upper. The house had incredible bones, and I could not wait to start designing!

The previous homeowners had a babysitter who was also an artist. She created beautiful murals all over a little boy’s room with magical creatures from a children’s book. It was intense, but it was also fun. As soon as my 2-year-old saw the room, he was filled with complete joy. I was a little frustrated, as we were buying the home, and I was planning to make the room neutral to be cohesive with the rest of the house.

Logan kept his colorful room, but I painted the nursery…. you guessed it. Grey! Moving from the baby’s room to Logan’s room, I felt like I was going from drab to fab. I grew to regret making the nursery so boring, and I vowed to allow my children to use their imagination to create the space they loved and wanted to spend quality time in.

Fast-forward to the early pandemic, our family moved to a new neighborhood and bought ANOTHER fixer-upper. We lived in Texas at the time, where there is a large Mexican influence on culture, food, and often design. Inspired by Logan’s kindergarten artwork I had framed in his room, we decided to choose the colors he liked most and the room evolved into a Mexican Fiesta!

Since we had such a mix of color and patterns on the feature wall, I opted for the rest of the room to remain light, bright, and simple.

Before

I removed the carpet and added white oak hardwoods. I also removed the wallpaper and added laser-cut wall tiles over blue paint. New custom drapes were made and we took off the wall cabinets. The fan and lighting were replaced, and we raised the baseboards to a more appropriate height for the scale of the room.

Inspiration

I framed his kindergarten artwork and let him choose which colors to pull for the room design. The art is on the adjacent wall opposite the windows.

After

This room ended up bold, colorful, full of joy, and definitely portrays the fiesta flair we know and love!
